About Charlotte, NC
In 1762, Charlotte, NC was named in honor of the British Queen, Charlotte Sophia. The county, Mecklenburg, was named for the region in Germany, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, where Charlotte Sophia was born. Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina and the seat of Mecklenburg County. The estimated population of Charlotte in 2011 was 751,087, making it the 17th most populated city in the United States. Charlotte, NC goes by two common nicknames, The Queen City, for obvious reasons, and The Hornet's Nest. The latter nickname stems from the American Revolutionary War, when British commander General Cornwallis occupied the city but was driven out by hostile residents. As a result, when he wrote about Charlotte, he called it "a hornet's nest of rebellion".
